Aggressive Prayer – (Part 5)

I don’t know about you, but there are many Bible verses that trouble me… irritate me… confuse me… and embarrass me.

Because they are not very pretty and they seem harsh to me.

“Suppose one of you shall have a friend, and shall go to him at midnight, and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him; and from inside he shall answer and say, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend,  yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs.  And I say to you, ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; and he who seeks finds  and to him who knocks it shall be opened (Luke 11:5-10).

You mean I’ve got to bug, beg and pester God?

Can’t I just ask one time?

Is my first request worth nothing?

How many times do I need to pound on His door… three… twelve… fifty… five hundred?

What’s the magic number?

Why does it have to feel so difficult and cumbersome?

I confess, I don’t know the answer to these, except that these are the words of Jesus and in the next few verses, Jesus points out that our Heavenly Father is far better than our earthly fathers and begrudging neighbors.  He actually sees, cares, notices and knows what I need.  He wants to give to us… but he wants us to ask intentionally and purposefully with persistence.

Will you be willing to ask God persistently, and aggressively as times as it takes to get an answer to help you overcome your immature parts that sabotage relationships?

Kay and I did, some twenty five years ago… over time He answered, over time He helped us change.

I’m hoping that 2011 will be an aggressive praying year for each and every one of you.

I know there will be fruit.

Happy New Year!
